Quick food along the beach.

Price: $6-9

Food: This is really a snack-bar/food-court kind of restaurant.  They had chicken sandwiches (alright), philly cheesesteak (alright), chicken fingers and other similar stuff.  There’s not a whole lot to choose from if you’re walking the beach and just want a quick bite to eat.  This filled the gap for us that day.  They serve beers (bottles) als0.

Atmosphere: This is in a little shopping strip facing A1A, with the beach directly across the street.  There are little tables under umbrellas outside, and not really much seating inside, but why would you want to?  Great people watching outside.

Service: The guy behind the counter was pleasant.

Tidbits: This is directly adjacent to the large metered parking lot at A1A & Las Olas.  Locals: You can also park for free & walk a couple blocks if you’ve registered with the city  (click here for more info).

Our favorite spot!

Price:Beers around $5, dinner plates $15-18, desserts $5

Food:Large, varied menu (complete menu available on their website). Conch salad is excellent, as are the BBQ ribs and smoked fish dip (sounds not too appetizing but is actually incredibly fabulous). The cole slaw is a bit too mayonnaise-y and creamy for our liking. The Key Lime pie is hit or miss. Once was great, another time was a tiny circular thing with hard whipped cream–obviously store bought. Just ask if it’s fresh.

Atmosphere:This is the reason we keep going back. It’s an open-air restaurant directly on the marina, and you can watch boats drive up & dock to have dinner, as well as watch the sun set. There’s been live music every evening we’ve gone. When it’s warm, they have lots of fans. We’ve been there when it’s cold (40 degrees!) and they roll down the plasic walls & turn on gas heaters.

Service:The waitstaff has always been incredibly pleasant. Kelly H. is our favorite!

Tidbits:You have to walk through an old hotel lobby to find this place. When you think you’re lost, keep walking. Don’t hesitate to ask the guy at the front desk or gift shop. They’re super-nice. This restaurant is a central location, as it’s across the street from the beach, close to charter fishing boats and lots of shopping. Valet parking is actually not a bad deal if you’re going to be there a while. Otherwise, use the metered lot across the street. Locals, this is a free lot if you’ve gotten the parking card. Authentic New York Style Pizza

Price: around $7/person. We got garlic knots, ½ stromboli & 2 slices cheese pizza with 2 drinks for $14 total.

Food:The stromboli was great. My husband really liked the New York style pizza. The garlic knot appetizers were addicting.

Atmosphere:Little restaurant with small tables, situated in the Riverwalk area. We went in ‘off-season,’ so it was pretty dead. You can take your food with you and walk a short distance to the water for some good people watching.

Service:The owner (cute older man) was a bit ‘spicy’ with some NY attitude. The diet coke wasn’t flowing well, and he told me to get something different next time–in a sarcastically joking way.

Tidbits:Paid parking. There are some garages in the area, or meters. The water taxi stops near this restaurant.

Aaron Carter knows his pizza & cheesesteak!?

Price: Dinner for two: Cheesesteak sand w/fries & drink, 2 slice cheese pizza with drink – $13.  They also have coupons and specials—ask at the counter.  Coupon on their site & full menu.

Food: SUPERB cheesesteak sandwich.  The first time I had it, it was fabulous.  Second time just so-so.  It was the end of the day, so I think I got the ‘bottom of the barrel.’  Pizza is NY style, pretty good according to my husband.

Atmosphere: Great small diner atmosphere, quiet.  We only went there in the evenings.  Apparently this place is ridiculously packed at lunch–they said their target customer is the business crowd (super-busy during the lunch hour M-F).  Not a large area for dining if crowded, but evenings are great.  Has smaller cafe-like feel.  In the City Park Mall.  Adjacent to area with MANY homeless.  While there are lots of cops in the downtown area, I would advise not to have valuables visible in your car.  I haven’t had any problems either at this restaurant or at the library across the street, but I have been concerned.

Service: GREAT service.  Super-nice guys working behind the counter.  They’ve all been very chatty and incredibly interesting!  One guy was a limo driver to the stars for years & has loads of stories.

Tidbits: Owned by Aaron Carter.  Metered parking.  Free Wi-Fi.

Authentic Cuban cuisine

Price: A little pricey, with our entrees around $12

Food: Authentic Cuban cuisine.  Has won several awards for their food (Best Cuban restaurant 2007).  Canned sodas with cup of ice.  Good breakfasts, the potatoes are fabulous.  For dinner, we got some roast pork and onions plate which was very good.

Atmosphere: Cozy little diner atmosphere.  They also have a walk-up window.

Service: None of the staff we interacted with spoke English.  There was some fumbling, gesturing, and pointing at the menu, which was fun in its own right, but I would have loved to have a conversation with the server.  I love asking, ‘What do you recommend?’ and couldn’t do it here.

Tidbits: Private parking
